Sony’s PlayStation 4 is the best-selling console this generation for a reason: It has an absolutely fantastic library of games. From sports to action to role-playing, there is something on the system for just about everyone. We’ve highlighted some of the best PS4 games available, which should satisfy your itchy trigger finger, tickle your funny bone, and maybe even coax out a tear or two. With 2018 bringing titles like God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2, we expect plenty of new games to join our pantheon of PS4 games soon.
1. God of War
2. Far Cry 5
Welcome to Hope County, Montana. This idyllic location is home to a community of freedom-loving people – and a fanatical doomsday cult known by many as The Project at Eden’s Gate. Led by the charismatic prophet Joseph Seed and his devoted siblings, Eden’s Gate has been surreptitiously infiltrating all aspects of daily life. When your arrival incites the cult to violently assume control of the region, you have to rise up ans spark the fires of resistance to liberate the besieged community. Freely explore Hope Couny’s rivers, lands and skies with the largest customisable weapon and vehicle roster ever in a Far Cry game. You are the hero of the story in a world that hits back with every strike, and where the places you discover and the locals you team up with will shape your story in ways you will never anticipate.
3. Ni no Kuni II – Revenant Kingdom
Its gorgeously lush visuals are quite simply among the best ever seen in a game, offering an object lesson in how stylisation has the power to trump photorealism even in the 4K age. Some players will lack the time or patience to put in the effort that any heavyweight role-playing game demands – this is a 50-hour adventure at least – but it puts forward an irresistible case for your attention. As video games are once again weathering ignorance-fuelled attacks that paint them as universally gun-centric, violent and nihilistic, Ni no Kuni is a timely counterpoint.
4. A Way Out
A Way Out is a true achievement in game design. Not only does it manage to take players on a true journey of emotion, it does so in a way that is only possible through the medium of video games. It manages to do something truly special by making two players to cooperate for an extended amount of time, and the discussions that happen on the couch or over voice chat can be just as revealing as the game itself. Josef Fares and Hazelight have undoubtedly raised the bar for co-op gaming.
5. Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World is an action role-playing game developed and published by Capcom. A part of the Monster Hunter series, it was released worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2018, with a Microsoft Windows version being scheduled later in the year. In the game, the player takes the role of a Hunter, tasked to hunt down and either kill or trap monsters that roam in one of several environmental spaces. If successful, the player is rewarded through loot consisting of parts from the monster and other elements that are used to craft weapons and armor, among other equipment. The game’s core loop has the player crafting appropriate gear to be able to hunt down more difficult monsters, which in turn provide parts that lead to more powerful gear. Players may hunt alone, or can hunt in cooperative groups of up to four players via the game’s online services.
6. Yakuza Kiwami 2 – PlayStation 4 SteelBook Edition
Kazuma Kiryu thought his Tojo Clan days were behind him. He and his young ward, Haruka Sawamura, have built a peaceful life from the ashes of conflict. All it took was a single gunshot to shatter that peace. Yukio Terada, the fifth chairman of the Tojo Clan, has been assassinated. With war on the horizon, the legendary Dragon of Dojima is pulled back into the world he wanted to leave behind.
7. Detroit Become Human
Inspired by the short called “Kara”, Detroit is a neo-noir thriller set in the near-future city of Detroit. Androids, who look exactly like human beings, have replaced humans in most tasks: they are workers, babysitters, gardeners, nurses, teachers, clerks. The story of Detroit starts with an unexplained incident that begins to affect the Androids. Some disappear without any explanation, others have unexpected behaviors and strangely show signs of emotions. The rumors of “deviant” androids start spreading, but no one seems to know what’s really happening…
8. Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus is a veritable masterpiece from top to bottom and will surely be remembered as one of the greatest games ever made.
9. Dark Souls Remastered
Delve into an epic dark fantasy universe stricken by decline and the Curse. Explore its intricate world design – full of hidden passages, dungeons and secrets – and uncover its deeply rooted lore.
10. Dragon Ball FighterZ Day One Edition
Dragon Ball FighterZ is one of the best Fighting games that holds an Anime License. The package brings us great visuals, fun gameplay and a rich content making it one of the most memorable experiences in this genre.
11. Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition
Horizon Zero Dawn is a perfect proof, that if you give developers creative freedom and time, it will get you a sweet reward. For fans of action adventures and wonderful worlds Horizon is the obvious choice.
12. NieR: Automata
Nier: Automata is an absolute masterclass in game design. It surpasses expectations time and time again resulting in an experience not to be missed by fans of action titles.
13. Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration
For PS4 players just getting their first opportunity to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, 20 Year Celebration is a complete and amazing package.
14. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX
For fans looking to revisit the series on their current gen console or a potential newcomer to the series, this is the ultimate compilation. Being able to revisit two of my favorites in the series, KH 2 Final Mix and Birth by Sleep Final Mix along on my PS4, reminds me why I fell in love with the series.
15. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Another fantastic game from Naughty Dog, a developer whose pedigree only seems to grow stronger with each title.
16. Final Fantasy XV
This is one of my favourite games of the year and it’s one I’d encourage any previous Final Fantasy fan to consider. Besides the brilliant nods to the series past — adorable retro touches like pixel art character menus and classic game soundtracks you can buy in servos and listen to in the Regalia — this is a game that’s doing something new and great with what’s come before. It’s the fondest I’ve felt about the series since VIII.
17. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA
Developer Nihon Falcom has always been talented, but this project represents a new high for the studio, a game where each piece comes together and interlocks in a way that feels damn near perfect. Don’t let the obscure name fool you; forgettable story aside, this is one of the best action-RPGs of this generation.
18. Burnout Paradise Remastered
Look, it’s really simple, Burnout Paradise Remastered is essential for fans of racing games everywhere. They just don’t make them like this anymore (but they really, really should).
19. Street Fighter V: Arcade
Even though Street Fighter V was in our opinion a great game, with this edition Capcom outdone it and took it to the next level. At this point Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition is the richest and most complete 2D fighter on the market.
20. Assassin’s Creed Origins
As beautiful as it is deadly, Origins’ Egyptian playground is finally everything you wanted the Creed to be.
