Coral reefs are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet and support thousands of marine species. About half a billion people worldwide depend on coral reefs for either food or coastal protection from waves and storms.
Unfortunately, coral reefs are dying all around the world and much of this has been caused by humans.
Reef Design Lab aims to help save the ocean with their Modular Artificial Reef Structure (MARS), created by Alex Goad.
MARS is made up of porous ceramic pieces that fit together to form a lattice structure.
These modular structures are cost effective and are estimated to reduce reef recovery time from hundreds of years to 8-15 years.
MARS can also be easily deployed by divers.
MARS is going through trials in locations around Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay and the results look promising.
